Burma’s military junta has sacked the head of one of the key government departments involved in the Cyclone Nargis relief and recovery effort following allegations that he stole money donated for survivors of the disaster, according to reliable sources in Rangoon.

Than Oo, a former colonel who was serving as the director general of the Ministry of Social Welfare’s Department of Relief and Resettlement, was accused of stealing millions of kyat (several hundreds of thousands of dollars) from international donations intended for Nargis-related projects, the sources said.

State-run newspapers did not publish any information about the dismissal of the senior official, who was recently arrested and interrogated by the regime’s Bureau of Special Investigation, according to sources in Naypyidaw.

The Department of Relief and Resettlement cooperates closely with international donors providing aid for humanitarian relief and recovery work in the cyclone-stricken Irrawaddy delta.

“The Department of Relief and Resettlement is responsible for accepting funds and donations from international NGOs,” said a Rangoon businessman who runs a local relief organization for Nargis victims.

“The department is supposed distribute the aid to assist people hit by the cyclone. He was probably taken into custody because materials donated by international NGOs went missing,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Burmese junta is holding a secret meeting in its capital, Naypyidaw, where a number of other officials have also reportedly been reshuffled.

Burma’s top military leader, Snr-Gen Than Shwe, has retired or reassigned around a dozen senior officials, according to military sources. However, The Irrawaddy has not been able to confirm the reports with other independent sources.

This is not unusual for the Burmese people. Than Oo has nothing to steal, except donations. He needs to take his welfare share first before he distributes to the Nargis victims. Than Oo himself is a victim of Nargis. Please forgive him.

It is what the Burmese government needs to solve the correction in this country. Having the correction is not a very good sign of country becoming an economic center. U Than Oo can notsteal the money of Nargis victims. They are your people and you should help them with your own money as well as the money of other people who donate for those victims.

Naturally!
Than Oo is just a member of the Ali Ba Ba (Than Shwe) led thieving gang of more than 400,000 in Burma.
Why nobody queried where those baubles (diamonds and others) Than Shwe's daughter was wearing at her wedding to that poor scapegoat of a major come from?
Maybe Than Oo was arrested for robbing the global funds, unlike Than Shwe robbing his own people.
Discrimination exists even in Burma for robbery, I guess.
Again, there is talk of Than Shwe resigning, or what?
If it is true, then Than Shwe, though dumb, is not stupid after all.
He should have known better than that his boat is as good as sunk since day one and heading into a deadly storm today also. He has no way of surviving at any rate now.
He has a slim chance of saving his hide abandoning ship today.
Let the other suckers in his outfit take the fall and he need never regret it also.
And this will admit he is no match for Daw Suu finally.
Yes, beat it fast man!
Maybe you have a chance to beat death for now, like Ne Win did in '88

An open venue for more engagement?
Otherwise, it might be again overlooked/dismissed by naysayers as SOS?
Those who are really concerned about Nargis victims beyond token politics should take note.
This has practical ramifications for actual much-needed ongoing cyclone relief.
The SPDC is capable of policing their own when necessary, despite the low regards it is being labeled with.

I wonder why we never get to read about corrupt members of the NLD-LA on The Irrawaddy? The Irrawaddy always claimed to be independent and often preaches about journalist ethic, but sadly, they fall short of actually practising what they preach! When will The Irrawaddy write about Sein Win and his cronies, who are enriching themselves with donation money and doing nothing for the country?

Stolen from the junta or stolen from the victims? The measures taken show what he did.
